Did You Know?
The Halifax Citadel is one of Canada’s most significant historic landmarks. Overlooking Halifax Harbour, the star-shaped fortress was built to protect the city and its strategic port from potential attack. The current fort, completed in 1856, was the fourth citadel constructed on the site. Although it never saw battle, it played an important role in military defence and communications. Today, the Halifax Citadel offers visitors a glimpse into nineteenth-century military life through restored buildings, costumed interpreters, and daily cannon firings. It stands as a symbol of Halifax’s rich heritage and enduring connection to Canada’s past..
